Course Description:

This course is designed to guide aspiring playwrights and screenwriters through the fundamentals of writing for stage and screen. Using Blake Snyder’s “Save the Cat” as our primary text, we will explore the essential elements of storytelling, character development, and structure. Students will learn to craft compelling narratives that captivate audiences.


Course Objectives:

  • Understand the principles of storytelling as outlined in “Save the Cat.”

  • Develop skills in creating engaging characters and dialogue.

  • Learn to structure a screenplay or stage play using the “Save the Cat” beat sheet.

  • Gain practical experience through writing exercises and peer reviews.

Jerry Fushianes

Jerry Fushianes

Jerry Fushianes is a multifaceted talent with a rich background in both the arts and healthcare. As an accomplished actor, writer, and producer, Jerry brings a wealth of experience and passion to the classroom. He is best known for his work on the Post Deployment Health Re-Assessment (PDHRA) program, where he played a pivotal role in reconnecting returning service members with their medical and mental health benefits.

Jerry’s journey in the arts began with numerous community theater roles, eventually leading to his casting as David in the National Touring Cast of David, A Champion of Israel. His dedication to the craft of storytelling is evident in his work as an Executive Producer and writer for the faith-based dramedy series Manna: The Wafer King.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Jerry holds a Master of Science as a Physician Assistant and a Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc). He has served in various healthcare roles, including as an Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant, and has been recognized with several awards for his contributions to the field.

Currently, Jerry is working on the stage musical Camp No Phone and is the producer for the screenplay Running with Scissors. His unique blend of artistic and professional expertise makes him an inspiring and knowledgeable instructor. He is excited to share his insights and guide students through the intricacies of writing for stage and screen, using Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat as a foundational text.
